FOUNDATIONS OF JIU-JITSU

Defense against a larger, untrained opponent.

Learn the essential self-defense techniques of Jiu-Jitsu developed from real-world confrontations and made famous by the Gracie family. The LŌKAHI Foundations of Jiu-Jitsu curriculum is comprised of 20 lessons, allowing adult students of any age and skill level to gain confidence through positional control and knowledge of the key concepts: base, balance, and leverage. In addition to learning safe movements and gym etiquette, students will also gain experience training in both gi and no-gi. Although Foundations is a standalone course, Collective Members of all ranks are able and encouraged to attend.

  • At LŌKAHI, the Foundations course is required for persons brand new to Jiu-Jitsu. The Foundations course must be passed with 80% attendance before a student is permitted to attend Fundamental classes or purchase a Collective Membership. Each graduate of the Foundations course will achieve a stripe on their white belt and certificate of completion.

Exceptions may apply for those with previous MMA or grappling background.

FUNDAMENTALS OF SPORT JIU-JITSU

Practice against other Jiu-Jitsu practitioners.

While Jiu-Jitsu is incredibly effective for self-defense, skilled practitioners wanted to find ways to challenge and test each other. Over time, they created rules and games leading to the sport we practice today. The LŌKAHI Fundamentals of Sport Jiu-Jitsu allows practitioners to explore new guards, concepts, and techniques in a fun and controlled environment. Through a rotating curriculum of the 7 different engagements, students will focus on positional battles, submissions, and an overview of the main rulesets used in competition. Fundamentals of Sport Jiu-Jitsu classes are offered to Adult Collective Members in both gi and no gi.

  • FUNDAMENTAL Classes are open to Collective Members of all ranks, however beginning practitioners must be a 1-stripe white belt to attend unless a previous exception was made. The Fundamentals course must be passed with an 80% attendance before a student is permitted to attend Advanced Jiu-Jitsu classes.

ADVANCED JIU-JITSU PRACTITIONERS

Develop mastery and individuality in your Jiu-Jitsu.

After a sound understanding of the fundamentals, practitioners begin refining the nuances of their game and making it their own. For those seeking to elevate their skills to new heights, LŌKAHI’s Advanced Jiu-Jitsu classes provide a platform for exploration and mastery. Drawing from the successful strategies and tactics in the ever-evolving sport of Jiu-Jitsu and tested on the mats, students will be challenged by new concepts, constraint-based training, and live rolling. Advanced Jiu-Jitsu classes are offered to Adult Collective members in both gi and no-gi.

  • Advanced Classes are open to Collective Members of all ranks that have successfully completed the FUNDAMENTALS course. Students awarded a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt or higher from another academy may also attend.

Team Open Mats are a time where Collective members can drill, practice, and spar with each other. In order to create a safe and enjoyable space for everyone, Team Open Mats require successful completion of either LŌKAHI FOUNDATIONS or FUNDAMENTALS courses. Students awarded a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt or higher from another academy may also attend with a drop-in fee.

Community Open Mats have become a staple within the Omaha community since 2022. We gladly welcome individuals from any gym and affiliation to train at no cost. In exchange, we ask that everyone take responsibility in their training partner’s safety and in helping us keep the gym clean.
